I’m not sure that I would define myself as a glam girl, but that is how I would describe my belated Great-Grandmother, a charmingly vivacious woman who went by “Great Grandmére” because she thought it sounded more alluring than Great Grammy. She wore her nicest furs to go grocery shopping, bought herself obnoxiously large diamond rings because she loved having a bit of “sparkle,” and never saw an extravagant hat that she didn’t “absolutely” have to have.
I loved staying with her over the occasional holiday weekend. She would drown me in costume jewelry and spritz me with some designer perfume that probably costs more than 10 years’ worth of my annual pittance of an allowance. “To be glamorous is an investment in oneself,” she would laugh.
Seeing as how she barely survived the Great Depression, my family tolerated these decadent tendencies of Great-Grandmére, but I still remember the luxurious feeling of wearing custom-made hats, smelling like what I imagine only princesses smell like, and getting to try carefully concocted skin creams on my seven-year-old skin. In short, my Great-Grandmére made me feel like a glam girl.
